Carpet Care
How often should you have your carpets professionally cleaned?
By Michelle Brooks · 7 August 2026
In short
For most homes, once or twice a year is ideal. Homes with children, pets or allergy sufferers usually benefit from more frequent cleaning. Here's how to judge the right schedule for your home — and why regular professional cleaning is worth it.
It’s one of the questions Michelle gets asked most: how often should you have your carpets professionally cleaned? The honest answer is that it depends on your home — but there are some simple rules of thumb that work for almost everyone.
The general rule: once or twice a year
For most family homes, a professional carpet clean once or twice a year keeps things fresh and hygienic. Regular hoovering handles the surface, but only a deep hot water extraction clean lifts out the dirt, dust, allergens and bacteria that work their way down into the fibres over time.
When you might need it more often
Some homes ask more of their carpets than others. You’ll likely benefit from more frequent cleaning if:
- You have pets — hair, dander and the occasional accident all build up quickly.
- You have young children — spills, crumbs and heavy floor-level play take their toll.
- Someone in the home has allergies or asthma — regular deep cleaning reduces the dust mites and allergens carpets trap.
- You have high-traffic areas — hallways, stairs and living rooms that see constant use.
In these homes, cleaning every six months (or even quarterly for the busiest areas) keeps carpets looking and feeling their best.
Signs it’s time for a clean
Not sure where you are in the cycle? A few tell-tale signs:
- Traffic lanes and darker patches where people walk most
- Carpets that feel flat, rough or “crunchy” underfoot
- Lingering odours that hoovering doesn’t shift
- A general dullness compared to how the carpet used to look
Why regular cleaning is worth it
Beyond appearance, regular professional cleaning helps your carpets last longer — trapped grit acts like sandpaper on the fibres every time you walk on it. Cleaning it out protects your investment, keeps your home healthier, and simply makes it a nicer place to be.
