Tired sofas, grubby armchairs and mystery stains — this is exactly what I do

You know that moment when you really look at your sofa? Not just glance at it, but actually look — and realise it's been carrying the evidence of family life for rather longer than you'd like to admit. Pet hair worked into every cushion seam. A stain you've been strategically placing a throw over for three months. Fabric that used to feel soft and now just feels… tired.

That's where I come in. I'm Michelle Brooks, and I've been bringing furniture back to life for over 20 years. Based in Hemel Hempstead, I provide professional upholstery cleaning for homes across Hertfordshire — including Kings Langley, Apsley, Bedmond, Sarratt and the surrounding villages. Every job is done by me personally, using professional-grade equipment and cleaning solutions that are safe for your family, your pets and your furniture.

No call centres. No rotating technicians. Just Michelle — turning up on time, doing the job properly, and leaving your home cleaner than she found it.

What types of upholstery do we clean?

Most people think of sofas first — and yes, I clean a lot of sofas. But upholstery cleaning covers far more than that. Here's what I work with regularly:

Sofas and corner units

Fabric and leather, from two-seaters to the full family corner sofa that's seen better days — including awkward modular sets.

Armchairs and recliners

Often the most used piece of furniture in the house, and usually the most overlooked. A professional clean makes a remarkable difference.

Dining chairs

Fabric dining chairs are magnets for food spills, grease and daily use. A set of six grimy chairs can look completely fresh after a proper clean.

Mattresses

We spend a third of our lives in bed. A professional mattress clean removes dust mites, odours and built-up residue for a genuinely cleaner sleep.

Cushions, headboards & footstools

The finishing touches that often get forgotten, but make a big difference to how fresh a room feels overall.

If you're not sure whether I can help with something specific, just give me a call. I'm always happy to talk it through.

How does professional upholstery cleaning actually work?

It's a fair question — and one I get asked a lot. Before I start, I'll assess the fabric type and condition, check for any existing damage or particularly stubborn staining, and confirm the best approach for your specific upholstery. I'll always be honest about what's achievable — if a stain is old or set in, I'll tell you upfront rather than let you down afterwards.

For most fabric upholstery, I use a hot water extraction method — the same professional-grade process used for carpet cleaning, adapted for furniture. It draws out dirt, allergens and bacteria from deep within the fibres, rather than just treating the surface. For delicate fabrics — velvet, linen, some wool blends — I adapt the method accordingly, and always test a small, discreet area first.

After cleaning, I can apply a stain protection treatment if you'd like — an invisible barrier that helps repel future spills and makes day-to-day maintenance much easier. Drying time is usually two to four hours, depending on fabric weight and ventilation.

Frequently asked questions about upholstery cleaning

What types of upholstery can you clean?

Michelle cleans sofas, armchairs, dining chairs, corner suites, ottomans and most soft furnishings. She'll always check the fabric first and choose a method that's safe for the material.

How long does upholstery take to dry?

Typically two to four hours, though thicker fabrics can take a little longer. Good ventilation helps it dry faster.

Will cleaning damage or shrink my sofa fabric?

No. Michelle tests an inconspicuous area first and adjusts the method to suit the fabric, cleaning thoroughly without over-wetting.

Can you remove pet smells and stains from upholstery?

In most cases, yes. Deep extraction cleaning plus deodorising lifts odours and marks, though very old or set-in stains may not come out completely. Michelle will be honest about what to expect.

Is upholstery cleaning safe for children and pets?

Yes. The solutions used are family- and pet-friendly, and Michelle can advise on how soon it's fine to use the furniture again.
